Why Join the South Carolina Academy of Science?
I. CONNECT WITH FELLOW SCIENTISTS
SCAS and SCJAS host a number of events throughout the year that allow budding and veteran scientists to connect with one another and hear about science being done in South Carolina and beyond.
II. ANNUAL SCAS / SCJAS MEETING
The annual meeting, typically held in late March or early April, allows high school students, college students, graduate students, and professional scientists to share their work with others. High school and college students are eligible to compete for prizes in a variety of subjects.
III. PROFESSIONAL AWARDS
SCAS supports a variety of professional awards. These include the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Science (selected in conjunction with the Governor’s Office), as well as Teacher of the Year Awards for high school and college STEM teachers. Your membership helps support these awards.
III. AWARDS TO STUDENT FOR THEIR RESEARCH
Each year the academy (through the associated Junior Academy) awards over $6,000 to students in grades 6-12 for their research projects and presentations. Your membership supports these awards.
IV. THE JUNIOR & MIDDLE/ELEMENTARY ACADEMY OF SCIENCE MESAS & SCJAS
One or two workshops for MS and HS students are delivered on a state-wide basis each year. Each workshop includes a plenary lecture (by a local or national STEM scientist) as well as hand-on presentations by scientists, teachers, business, industry and government leaders to stimulate students to enter the fields of mathematics, engineering, computer science and science. Your membership helps support this important effort to engage young people in South Carolina.
V. SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIRS
SCAS sponsors and coordinates eight science fair regions in South Carolina. Each ISEF affiliated region can send students and teachers (chaperones) to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Your membership helps support these efforts.
VI. YOUNG RESEARCHER GRANTS-IN-AID PROGRAM
SCAS funds research grants (on a limited basis) to students through the support of the SCJAS Trust Fund. Your membership supports this effort.
VI. SCAS MESAS MAIL-IN CONTEST
Designed by industry and college personnel, this contest awards cash prizes to students. Every school that participates has at least one winner. Winners are announced at the school, regional and state level. Cash prizes range from $25-$100. Your membership helps support the contest and awards.
